A/C not working

Well the chicago area finally got some warm weather but bad news is when I tried my A/C on my 03 expy with 17K miles it doesn't work at all. Yellow light goes on and fan kicks in higher speed when on max but no cold whatsoever. Any ideas what the problem is? I didn't use it that much the last couple seasons. Should this be covered under warranty?

I would pressure test the refrigerant to see if there is some in there.

I would also verify that the comrpessor is actually turning.

All of this should be covered under warranty, especially if there is a leak in the system. Although, if the leak was caused by something other than a manufacturing defect, then I do not think that there will be any recourse through the warranty process.

How do I pressure test the refrigerant? I wonder if auto zone rents the tool for this...is it hard to do?
To verify the compressor is turning I just look under the hood and make sure the pully on it is turning? It would be if the belt is on it right?
What would cause the leak other than defect? We did have a very cold winter and I wonder if that did something.

Sorry...i am not as well versed in this as many here. Thanks for your help.

You can test the refrigerant level with a tool from Wal-Mart. It is pretty cheap. Just put it on the proper port. (I do not know which one off hand but the instructions will tell you. I can then post pics of the low side and high side ports)

If you are too low the the compressor won't turn. So to check the AC compressor turn on the truck with the AC on.

Look in the center of the pulley. The center portion must be turning too. There is a clutch in there to turn it on and off. Because the belt is always turning the pulley the clutch is important to keep the system from running when you do not want it to.

A rock or something in the evaporator (looks like a radiator and is in the same area.) could have caused all the R-134A to leak out.

Cold winters should not affect it.

Take my advice. You should take it in under warranty. If you do not understand automotive refrigeration, you will be spending a bunch of other peoples time on this forum to figure it out, and many people recommend the wrong thing, increasing your risk of human injury, or system failure. While the autmakers have started to make the systems idiot proof, there is no such thing...
