I have a '92 Ford Extended cab 4wd. It has the smaller engine in it and I really need more power. I have 125,000 miles so it is understandable to loose power. What options do I have? Can I put the 351 engine in it without too much problem? Thanks
I swapped my stock 302 for a mustang HO 302 in my 86 f150... it was a real nice conversion, and made a real difference to the drivability of the truck. If you do this, you'll need to use the following parts from your original engine:
- complete engine intake manifold with all sensors...
- valve covers and oilpan...
In other words strip the HO down to the long block... and build it back up with your original plumbing, covers and pan. Make sure you use the harmonic damper and flex plate from the HO... as the firing order is different. The HO uses the 351w firing order. If I recall correctly, you'll have to switch two plug wires. It is a very easy conversion and will make a world of difference to your truck. I even got better gas mileage with the HO.
I had the 351 in my 90 model F150 RC/SB I Loved it but the milage was not all that hot. I had put a chip in it. Full dual exhaust with headers, an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, 30 lb injectors (flow matched) Jacobs ignition and a very mild cam from Compucam. Ran like a scalded dog and pulled like mad. I wouldn't figure that a 351 conversion would be too rough. I would however make sure to get all the wiring and the computer from the donor truck. Your mounts will stay the same though. Unless your truck has the cooling package you might want to get the radiator as well. Have fun and good luck. Let me know if I can be of any help.
