I have a question, when I am in cruise, usually around 75, It will downshift going up a hill like it should, but sometimes it doesnt like to go back into overdrive, Sometimes I have to blip the throttle to get it to rev back down, Any suggestions would be great, Thanks.
I have a commercial use 2003 V10 that does that and an Xterra that does it ..very annoying. I don't think there is much to do about it except normal maintenance. The V10 only does it if cruise is set between 73-76mph the Xterra does it for any speed above 74mph. I have tried battery disconnect and computer re-boot but it did not help.
I am open to any one else with a suggestion that does not include the dealer. I hate taking piddly problems to the dealer.
My '01 wants to hold a shift like that sometimes, usually going uphill. I creditted Ford for building a system that actually held the shift in places it was necessary. Mine usually calms down eventually, but I have seen it do this going up hills in 3rd gear, without cruise. It will hold the 3rd gear for a lot longer than you'd think was necessary, but in reality, in my case at least, it actually needed it - I didn't realize I was going uphill until I looked at the GPS climbing in elevation
The reason your trucks down shift out of o/d is because of % of load. Generaly Ford products shift out of o/d at approximently 70% load and if it does not shift back into o/d when you think it should it is more than likely seeing around that number. Remember that there is about 32 square feet of frontage on a tipical SD and load increases with speed, so think about this; if you drive at 55mph and your load is at around 40-45% and you run up a moderate grade say 4 to 5% your truck will stay in o/d but if you are running at say 75mph your truck is seeing a load of about 65% before the 4-5% grade and the longer the grade is the more likely your truck will shift down, so you start up the grade and your truck shifts down and when it seems like you have crested the grade it should shift back right? Well you might still be cimbing a grade that you can not tell by the seat of you pants but the load of the truck can really tell whats going on and will not up shift. Also the truck will not shift back into o/d until the laod is back around 55%.Another thing that happens is that when you are pulling a load, if you run into grades that make the truck down shift more that if the truck were emty the less it will be willing to shift back because of adaptive shift capability. Ford is building the truck to self preserve themselfs, its to keep trans fluid temps down and not prematurely wear out the transmissions and keep warrenaty costs down. I hope this helps to enlighten everybody on this subject and sorry about the spelling. To let you know where I am coming from, I have 20 years in a Ford dealer as a driveability specialist.
