Normal Timing for 302

Hi - Just fired the 302 for the first time. It is a 78 block w/ heads from an 87 (both f-150's), mild cam upgrade, and 4bbl carb, single glasspack currently.

Now the question:

Is it normal to have it running at 10 degrees after tdc (because that is where it does right now)?

Yea 10 degrees is OK, might even be better with 12-14 degrees. Just remember the more timing you give it, the more power it'll make up to a certain point, but at the same time, it's appetite for higher octane fuel will also increase.

10 degrees AFTER TDC is retarded smog motor timing.

Pre-smog 289s were 6 degrees BEFORE TDC for 2 BBL and 12 for 4 BBL and Hi-po.

You may be stuck with the After TDC depending on your cam and ignition set up. I can't be sure, but I don't think my 289 would even run at 10 ATDC.

Yea, you're right, it was late and I didn't notice he said ATC.

Hmm. I'll have to double check - I was going by what the mechanic said over the phone. I can't wait to see/hear it run for myself.
