Has anyone else been having trouble with sears lately? Let me explain my problem, two years ago I was in need of a tool box, so my dad went to sears and bought the top part of a two piece tool box, well, I recently had the money to buy the bottom part and since sears had it on sale for $130 off, I figured I would buy it. Well, the part that I have is red, so I wanted the matching bottom to go with it, but the problem was that the black one was on sale, not the red one even though they are the same box. I stood at the register for half an hour argueing with the clerk why the price wouldn't be the same for both, then finally they told me that if I would decide to get the red box it would have to be special ordered since they no longer keep them in stock, even the manager was of no help. So I decided to go with the black box, well they had to order that one too. Then to top that off, yesterday they had the matching top black chest on sale for $80 off, well I couldn't get it since they didn't have it in stock. To top this off, I had a set of wrenches I bought and they had went on sale after I bought them so I figured I would get the difference, no, instead of getting $4, I have a gift card worth $4 because when you return a tool to sears, you don't get cash money, you get a gift card to sears!!!!!!! On top of all this, I witnessed a guy trying to get a ratchet swapped out because it broke, they had to get the manager to ok the swap out, I thought the warrenty stated "no questions asked". I am a diesel mechanic and I bought thoussands of dollars of these craftsman tools, but if I have to go through all this to get a tool, it isn't worth it. One of the clerks told me after they had merged with k-mart, they changed all the policies. Any one else have these problems with sears? Snap-on is looking better and better.
did you try another sears store?
although i havent been in a sears since the mergeing with kmart, i never had problems exchanging tools, even ones that were in my garage when it burned down.
When they place an item on sale it usually means they have too many or got a special deal. Trying to get a similar item for the sale price is unreasonable unless they are out of the item that was on sale.
Take the box apart and have it painted if you are worried about matching colors. Personally I don't worry about things like that.
Store credit is common for many companies.

Or, you could go to the Sears paint department. Last time I looked (about 2 years ago) they had the red and dark grey paint in spray cans. Just pull the drawers out and go at it.
On top of all this, I witnessed a guy trying to get a ratchet swapped out because it broke, they had to get the manager to ok the swap out, I thought the warrenty stated "no questions asked".
You should have hung around a couple of minutes more. The Sears manager probably asked "Would you like to supersize your order today?".
The last tie I got anything replaced at SEARS was the beginning of last summer. I broke a shovel. They didn't have the exact kind so I grabbed something close and it wasn't a problem. I also recently took in a tape measure made by Champion. That is their off brand sold at SEARS but not CRAFTSMAN. The thingie broke off of the tip and I was just hoping to get one of their replacement tapes to fit in the case. (Now why they sell CRAFTSMAN replacement tapes for the fully guaranteed CRAFTSMAN tape measures is beyond me) The sales guy just took my old Champion and replaced it with a CRAFTSMAN. As for actual tools I've only replaced a few several years ago with no problems.
As was said earlier check if yo uget the same treatment at another store. I've only exchanged stuff at three but all have been hassle free.
i've never returned a tape measure. if you drop one down a 20 foot sewer you probably don't want it back.
i've never had a problem with sears but i will check into the kmart things before i make any more big purchases from them. i know they're more expensive but i watch their flyer for sales. some of the big sales are when they're bringing in a new line.
i might just have gotten the color they had in stock. rachets i got at canadian tire and they fixed mine. my b.i.l.'s kid goes thru a lot of them and his are from sears. he says he never has a problem changing broken tools but he goes when the regular guy's not there. the new guy doesn't know how to fix them so he gets new rachets.
I have a craftsman wire feed welder, that needs repair. Sears sevice center told me they don't repair them. Not worth it. I asked if that makes it disposable they told me I needed a reciept and return was good for 90 days and warranty 1 year.
I probably have over 3k in Craftsman tools.
You have to be careful with Craftsman tools. Most of the hand tools are made in USA, they do have some cheaper versions that aren't and then the Cahmpion brand theat definately arent. It is my understanding that all of the power tools are basically farmed out to the cheapest bidder, so who knows what Chinese company actualy makes them.
I've never had a problem relacing broken hand tools at Sears. I did have a slight hassle replacing a leaking floor jack.
I've never had a hassle replacing broken Snap-On , Mac, or Matco tools either. Except that now that I am no longer twisting a wrench for a living tracking a tool guy down can be a problem.
Basically--DO NOT BUY POWER TOOLS FROM SEARS
As far as welders go, stick witha name brand, Miller, Lincoln, Hobart, etc (by the way Miller owns and operates Hobart)
Sears farms out all of their hand tools to the lowest bidder also. Sears does not make anything and their tool specifications have been miserable since ~1970.
