Pitman Arms for newbies

I have a 97' 4x4, 72000 and am trying to fix the squeaking pitman arm. I've bought a pitman arm puller but can't seam to find the space to put it on. Does the steering gear have to come off? I have a new arm so would cutting the old one be a better choice? Thanks

Yes you'll have to remove the steering gear or at least unbolt it off the frame and move it enough to work. That's how I do it.

Nope you shouldn't need an alignment if all you're doing is replacing the pitman arm.
