After deciding not to throw away money on a cheap CAI and not being able to buy a good one, I decided to do my own mod. I bought a spare air cleaner assembly on ebay for $14 so I could keep the original intact. I took the tube end that the filter fits into and cut the end off about an inch back from where it starts to neck down. About 3/4 " of the filter is exposed (not including the plastic cone on the end of the element). I wanted to keep most of the element covered to help with heat soak. The filter has little or no restriction and there is a definite SOP improvement. Now all I have to do is score a K&N type drop in filter and open that exhaust up a little and I'll be all set.

I figure its no worse than any of the other open element intake systems and a heck of a lot cheaper. I also kept the stock air box intact on my 04 Mustang GT, just removed the silencer. On the GT I did buy a used (ebay again) C&L Trueflow intake pipe for a little airflow help along with an AFE drop in filter (yea, ebay). I'm trying to keep as much low end torque as possible with the Expy so I decided to use the stock intake tubing.

Yep, it is not bad, don't get me wrong. Heck, I found 11 Hp on the dyno by taking my K&N and putting it right on the throttle body instead of the Vortech tube that put it down forward. (no mass air).
