Timing

I installed a Jacobs ignition and it seemed a little sluggish from a dead start. I loosened my distributor and turned it clock wise just a bit. It seems to run alot better with more response and power. Will I hurt anything? What are pros and cons of advanceing or retarding the timing? Thanks Tim

Do you have a timing light? What is the initial setting?

Timing

First, get a timing light and check what you've done. I believe you retarded the timing somewhat which should give you more low end torque. If you are carburated, then you should be able to run anywhere between 6 and 14 degrees BTDC. The closer to 6 that you get the more low end torque you should gain, the closer to 14..the more top end hp. Your truck will probably run a little hotter closer to 14 but you will also get better gas mileage. A good way to time a vehicle without a light is by advancing the distributor until the engine just starts to ping under acceleration, then back off 1 or 2 degrees. I installed an adjustable timing device from MSD and adjust my timing from behind the wheel. If I'm towing, I retard the timing to 6 or 7 degrees; otherwise I keep it between 13-15. I may retard the timing a little in 100 degree heat just to help the engine run a little cooler.
