My 1994 Explorer stalls abruptly with out warning while driving. After a couple minutes it will I can restart it and it runs find till the next time. The only code in the EEC is 12 which I would appreciate if some one could tell me what that translates to. I have been able to duplicate the problem at start up, I turn the key on, I do not hear the fuel pump relay click and the fuel pump does not run. I turn the key back off and try again and it starts. I have replaced the relay but the problem persists. I notice when you turn the key on to the ignition position and do not start the engine the fuel pump turns off after a few seconds, which is normal but I wonder if the circuit/component that controls this process maybe causing my problem ? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED AS I HAVE SOLD THIS VEHICLE TO A FRIEND, THANKS !!!!!!
is RPM not within self-test upper limit.may not mean much.the must common causes i know for your rig-i had a 94 limited-stalling are big vacuum leaks due to cracked/rotten hoses, clogged pvc valves ,inspect all vacuum lines carefully this is free and the repairs are cheap if YOU do it.this can also take a while, include all vacuum lines that go to tranny, fuel tank area, emissions cannisters, egr tab etc.can also be a faulty fuel press. regulator, crud in fuel system, water in gas if it sneezes when dies, the valve on the cannister is bad .if it stalls while moving, look at the tach quickly,if it drops slowly with the engine the ignition system is not the problem(most likely not) if it falls fast to the peg it is faulty or lost its power intermittently-look at eletrical then-key switch, clean connections, good bat, tfe, etc
if electrical-the most common fault in today's rides is a high resistance fault,ie loose corroded grounds, corroded connections wires stressed so only a few strands of wire are connected.modules and sensors failing even after low current abuse are not so common.12 volt systems need clean ,quality connections to work rite.an example-a guy came to me on his 3 rd in tank fuel pump,in one year,I found a corroded /rotten wire in the harness inside the tank.could not see it used a meter, had high resistance, replaced it,works great.the wire was dark from corrosion ,causing new pumps to die in weeks.he had gone to other shops in town,he lost a lot of money to poor diagnostic skills.im my gm training and electronics classes we Always find the ROOT cause of a failure to prevent future fails.this is what separates the good techs from the Bubbas.
