99 Exp - Trans Command Problem?

I drove a really nice Eddie Bauer 4.0 SOHC, auto, with the push button 4 wheel auto feature today. It has just 64,000 miles on it.
The problem I experienced with it was a slight front end shudder at really low speed when turning or coming to a stop. It feels like the 4 wheel drive is partially engaged when it's not supposed to be. I also took it for a short run in the dirt and in a tight circle it would make a would make a sharp clunk about once per circle.
From what I have found on this site it sounds like to me that the problem is a bad trans command module or maybe one of the ABS sensors or maybe all of that.
The dealer said that he will fix it.
I guess my questions are: am I on the right track with what the problem is, does this happen a lot, should I steer clear of this rig even if they get it fixed?
Maybe I would be better off just keeping my old 91 Exp with 154,000 on it as it's not nearly as complicated as the newer one.

Pony Power,
Sounds a little like a dry CV joint on one of the front axles. They need to be checked and lubed, or replaced.
If the dealer wants to repair it,tell him you want a copy of the repair bill with the fault that was cured and any parts that were replaced.
On this sohc engine, you want to be sure it makes NO clattering or rattle noise on a cold start up.They had problems with the cam drive chain tensioners failing early. It is a real big expense to repair.Look in the forum at tha problems with this motor and see if the dealer will give you a WRITTEN warrantee on it up to a 100,000 miles.
Good luck with it,Huffer

Hey Huffer, I got the Chevrolet dealer where the Explorer was for sale to send it in to a Ford dealer and they ran through diagnostics and didn't come up with anything except normal operation caused by the partial engagement of the 4 wheel auto function. As I understand it. there is about 5% power going to the front at all times and it has to break loose on dry pavement if it gets in a bind.
I think that I made a bigger deal out of it than it was, as it wasn't mine yet and I was trying to talk them down some more.
Anyway it runs good except that you can sometimes feel it release at real slow speed with a tight turn. Another thing is the tires are cr**, General all terrain with the tread down to the wear bars, so they vibrate some and howl.
The motor is real quiet on a cold start up and generally runs real smooth and quiet compared to my 91 4.0.
I couldn't get them to warranty it for me unless I bought one of those expensive types that they love to sell but I do have the work sheet from the Ford dealer that shows what they did and and says it's OK. I know that dealers history and think they can be trusted; as far as you can trust a dealer anyway. but if it were to go T.U. that work sheet would make them look pretty bad.
I'm confident we'll be OK as it's a really clean one owner, local car with only 64,000 miles on it. I just couldn't pass it up for $10,900, comparable ones like this are going for around $13,000 around here.
Thanks for you input.
