fluttering or tapping at shift changes
1 Trans and torque converter getting sloppy
2 Loose vibrating exhaust or trans shields
3 Piston slap
4 Flutter
True exhaust flutter is almost always under load at low speeds and rpm constant noise and not just between shifts
Piston slap on that old a motor falls into if they didn't break by now they will last until the rebuild
The 4R100 tranny can and does tend to exhibit more and more noises as they get much beyond 100K on them. Get a good flush and re-lube and see if it still does it then have a tranny specialist take a peek. The rebuilds are not as bad if you do it before bad damage happens.
Check out Brian at Brians Truck Stop BTS google it
He does a terrific job at making them bullet proof... on the other hand only if you have plans to keep it another 150K
Many of us track down the "flutter" to loose and resonating shields or the tin cover in front of the trans bell housing. Many times the exhaust shields have little gravel inside or broken spot welds and they can make a racket. We take the tin tranny shield off, bend it in half down the middle, bend it back sort of flat and reinstall it. Makes it stiffer and quiet.
