Hey everybody. Has anyone ever replaced a schraeder valve, and if so, what did it take parts and labor wise? I think I am going to have to do mine because it is leaking fuel, and that definitely isn't a good deal. Thanks.
If its just leaking from the core of the valve, just replace the core. That shouldn't be a big deal and a regular valve stem tool will do the trick to remove and install...
Thanks rowdyone, that saved me some money and time. I replaced the core, and no more leaking. I was wondering if there was any way that one could tell if the truck had the california kit on it, because I checked the pressure, and it was about 80 psi. Is it possible that a difference in how tight the core on the valve is could affect the pressure reading? I checked for a shim, and there wasn't one, so I don't know why the pressure is so high. I just used a tire gauge though, but it was pretty consistent at 80, so I don't know. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
I can't tell you about a CA kit, but I would think that a schrader valve would still allow a good reading. You are looking for a pressure, not flow, so as long as the gauge can depress the schrader the pressure will move into the gauge. It just may be slow to reach the full reading if the valve is barely open. If it was not open at all you would read zero.
Now I am not sure how good a reading you will get from the tire guage. What happens with the fuel pressure here on the FPR is a pulse charge. So in other words you get pulses on the pressure.
A good fluid filled guage will help dampen that as well will not be reading the max spikes of pressure so much, it will read the best average and most consistant pressure.
The tire guage will show the max spikes as it goes out as far and will not rebound from this. So I would not expect such a good reading to count on dude.
Thanks rowdyone. Where would you get a fluid filled gauge? I have looked around some here at hardware stores and such, and haven't yet found one. Is there any way to identify the CA kit? Was it sold stock on trucks sold in CA, or only as an aftermarket part? Thanks.
A fluid filled gauge can be found at an industrial supply store. Most industrial quality gauges have a small opening called a snubber that minimizes the fluctuations. A liguid filled gauge is more durable to vibration, but any good gauge should have a snubber built in and it will be good enough to let you see what's going on. An old oil pressure gauge may be a cheaper option also.
I can't help you on the CAL option. You can get a guage like you need off a tool truck, ie. snap on, mac or maybe even at sears with the craftsman line. You could get one also at a good pump and chemical spray shop too. Sorry I can't help you any on thew Cal option...
