ok guys try this one out. truck has had many problems with gp and or relay. The truck has been to the dealer at least 3 times and to another mechanic 3 times. well its the same thing every time gp are either bad or gpr is bad.
Well after i read the post on gpr in this forum i decided to put the manual switch in my truck. i put it in and it was easy and worked well for about 2 months. Now the truck is starting to become hard starting again.I went ahead and changed the GPR and still was hard to start this moring.Any suggestions on how to corect this problem???
thanks
Chris
Hi Chris, your glow plugs and relay might be okay. You could be suffering from fuel draining back from the system and that will give you a real fit. Try parking with the nose of the truck low or going down hill and see if you still have the hard start problem. Also, might want to try plugging in the block heater for a few hours before lift off and see if this helps. Might also be a problem with the temp sensor for the glow plug system going goofy on you. I'm not sure which is the sensor for that, but i'm sure someone in here can tell you. Be sure to not overwork the starter, they are sensitive to heat damage.
When I first got my '86, it had a pushbutton in it, and several bad plugs.
I put a new set of plugs in it, and she started great.
Unfortunately, I had read on a forum that normal on-time for the 6.9 GP's was 10 seconds. I would commonly hold it for 10-12, sometimes 15 in the cold-weather; thinking that there must be some 'margin' built in.
Nope. That forum post is wrong. The stock 6.9 plugs heat up in 4-5 seconds. 10 seconds is too long.
Short version: over a period of 2-3 months, I burned out those brand-new Beru GP's one by one. Didn't even realize it was happening until the truck became hard to start again...
Sounds familiar, eh?
I do like having the GP's under my control...i.e. having the pushbutton; but I switched to dual-coil GP's. They self-regulate...so they don't burn out, even if you hold the button on too long. I get mine from Tim at: accuratediesel.com
well that sounds very familiar, i too read that 10 sec post and sometimes hold it down for a 12-15 count, thinking it would be better. Time to change plugs once again.
