I currently own an 86 F150 4x4 and its getting in need of repair. I recently aquired a 90 4x4 that was written off. It has a 5.0 in it and a 5 speed tranny with auto locking hubs. I want to use the tranny and transfer case out of the 90(Borg Warner) in my 86. Do I have to use the front axle out of the 90 because of the locking hubs? Or will I be able to just take the tranny and tranfer case (not electronic) and bolt on to my 86? Any help is appriciated.
Fordtrucktough, Does your 86' have a 5.0 engine? Does it also have manual trans? What type of hubs does the 86' have? from what I gather, without looking at the trucks and that they both have the same bellhousing bolt pattern, it should work. I don't beleive that you would have to swap out the front axel. You may need to use the drive shafts that come off of the newer truck because the distance to the front and rear diff's may vary with the transfer case positioning. You may need the trans mount out of the newer truck also. If you were to swap out the front axel, you would need to make sure that gearing in the front diff' matches the gearing in the rear diff. Good luck.
bag the auto hubs, watch out for abs brakes , you should just keep the 86 axle.
previous post is correct about driveshaft lengths, and i would be wary of five speed manual if it is mazda unit. also, when swapping motors, you will need to swap computers.
Fordtrucktough, As long as both trucks are same body,(eg: same wheelbase and cab length style), it shouldn't be too big of a deal. I agree with Billyb that you should keep the manual locking hubs with the 86' axel and that you will need the computer that goes with the engine out of the donor truck. Good luck.
