i don't know if it is a superduty thing or just the 5.4. has anyone figured a good way to get the oil filter off with out making a mess. on mine when i first unscrew it and leave it lose it drains for a while, then it stops but as soon as you get the filter off a bunch more drains and makes a big mess. i was just wondering if anyone has a better way to do this. i have the fumoto valve and that makes a huge difference. but now i need something for the filter.
I just figured it out last oil change.. I've been making messes for over 10 years on my previous vehicles.
Take a screwdriver and punch a hole in the bottom center of the filter before you unscrew it. Let it drain for a few minutes, then unscrew slowly. I did it last month without spilling a drop.
I've also read that soem folks cut the top off of 2-liter coke bottles. They'll slip the bottle over the (loosened?) filter. The bottle catches all the oil as the filter is spunn off.
Me, I just loosen it and let it drain. then I take it off and turn it upside down in my drain pan. I use one of those 14qt drain pans you see at Wal-Mart. I'll slide a 4' wide piece of cardboard under the truck before I start. As long as it's not too windy, I don't get anything on the driveway.
Does the 5.4 have a vertical filter? I know my truck has a vertical, and I always punch a hole in the bottom and let it drain while the engine is draining. By the time I unscrew it and take it, it's empty and I don't spill a drop.
