Actually I like having the shifter on the column in my '03. Frees up a lot of space between the seats. The only thing I don't understand is why they put center storage area so far back. You can't open it unless you are stopped. You have to twist around and use your left hand to open it properly. Could be that I don't drive with my seat back far enough? I am only 5' 7" so I have to up the seat a little to be comfortable. I like the idea of the beverage holders so conveniently placed where the floor shifter would be. We are talking about an SUV, not a sports car with a 6 speed standard trans with a short throw shifter. Why does an automatic SUV need the shifter on the floor??
Also the shifter does NOT get in the way of any controls on the radio, heater or anything else for that matter. Could be the earlier model Escapes had a longer shift lever?? I think '03 was the last year for the column shifter or was it '04. Have no idea why people screamed for a floor shifter, unless it was cost effective for Ford to put the shifter there instead of on the steering column.
Seriously, the little compartment on the '03 above the larger one is good for keeping your credit and gas cards handy. Since the Escape is such a gas guzzler with a small gas tank, it makes it easier to have those cards handy when you fill up every other day at the gas station .
