bad fuel pump?????
the only way my truck starts is if i put starter fluid in her and then shut right down when used up. i'm guessing fuel pump? any other things i should check. mechanically challenged!!!!

Check your fuses for the fuel pumps. Then check the Fuel pump relay's, then the fusable link by the starter relay. Then check the fuel pump safety switch which is under the oil pressure sending unit. Also check the Inertia switch which is on the firewall inside the cab near the passenger side. If the white button on top is popped up, push it down to reset it. It would really help to know what year it is and what engine the truck has in it. Ford put 3 different fuel pumps in thier trucks from 80-86. Low pressure electric in-tank for the carb'ed 460, high pressure electric for the 302 EFI, and regular mechanical style for all the rest. Some more info could really help.

take the fuel line off the carb but leave it attached to the fuel pump.
hold the open end straight up in the air (WEAR GLASSES) and have a friend crank over the engine.
if fuel squirts out, the pump is good.
if not, replace it (and the filter while you're in there.)
