My limit on safe solo driving is about 8hr/day. So, anything longer than that I fly. While I do have my pilots license, I do not own a plane, so renting can be more expensive than flying commercial. If you fly, just try not to book an Airbus. "If it aint Boeing im not going."
depends, i would say drive. What airline would you be flying, i know some of them are prone to having big delays, or at least, thats the experience i've had with them. Last time I flew, I had to wait 2.5 hrs before the plane could take off bc something had malfunctioned, the time before that i had a 1.5 hr delay for another malfunction. I have flown 3 times, the first time when i was little, as far as i remember, it was pretty well, no delays. But I would definately drive, driving is a lot of fun in my opinion, I don't really get too tired from it.
If the drive is less than 12 hours, I would definitely drive. The hassles of flying (waiting, security, delays, no smoking) and inconveince for your wife or others to pick you up and drop you off at the airport or renting and returning a car is too much hassle. Enjoy your truck! Keep it out of the airport parking lots.
My wife 'n kids really get annoyed with me, 'cause I have this 1000 mile rule. If it's less than 1000 miles, I drive. If it's over, I'll think about it. A few years ago we drove home to Orygun from Orlando. Didn't seem like a great idea to the family at the time, but they still talk about that trip. You just can't appreciate how big Texas is until you drive it.
I hate to sidetrack this thread but what made the trip so good that involved Texas? I usually drive 1000+ miles during my Spring Break time and once or twice in the summer just going to Dallas and Waco from here. Not hard to hit 1000 miles and be nowhere close to leaving Texas.
Day 1 we made it to Pensacola. Day two we travelled through 5 states. We spent most of day three driving through Texas, with a smidgen of Ok and Ks thrown in. An airplane just doesn't do justice to Texas's size. Or how impressive the Rockies are after coming across the plains.
Over the Easter long weekend we did a 8 hour drive. Don't get me wrong, the scenery was nice. But after 8 hours sitting on my ... well, you know, it gets sore. Even getting out and stretching doesn't help much. Next time we have to go to Prince George, we're flying.
Sure, the security checks, check in, baggage claim, and delayed flight make for a long day, but for the actual time sitting in the plane compared to sitting in a car makes it worth it to me.
As for us, we're going to Hawaii at the end of the month. We sure can't drive there now, can we?
Well I decided to fly and that went without any problems. The parking lot that I left my truck in was fenced off and had a guy patrolling it. I saved about 5 hours total in traveling time but I got to stay even longer at home because I didn't have to worry about staying awake the whole travel time. All in all it went OK.
