noise when cold
i have a 86 4x4 with a 300 6cyl. when the engine is cold it has a noise under the hood that sounds like an exhaust leak near the manifold. it runs really smooth at idle speed.when accellerating it acts as if on five cylinders. once it is warm it run like a new truck. any ideas?

the exhaust manifold mat be loose, when its cold it may leak, when it heats up it may expand, sealing up the leak.

noise when cold
To locate an exhaust leak get a sprayer filled with soapy water and spray it around all exhaust connections. If there is a leak the soapy water will bubble up indicating the source of the leak. Dont use any chemical base that is flammable! I found that out and was really lucky at the same time.
