i have a 69 f-100. the person that had the truck before me did some work on it to paint it. Not a good idea. I looks like they took a grinder to it with a really corse disc to it. Well on the hood it the main spot it has deep cuts into the metal and old paint. I have taken scotch brite and a drill to clear off all the old paint. all of the paint is gone now, but it has scrathces in the metal.
i could i take spot putty to these places sand it smooth and be done.
But with the hood being opened and closed and things like that would those spots of putty break loose and pop out?
80 grit is usually used to strip paint down to bare metal, the roughness gives the primer something to hold on to. By using a scotchbrite pad, you have most likely polished the surface to the point it may need roughing up again in order for the primer to stick.
If the gouges are below the surface, they should be covered by a coat of epoxy primer followed by 2-3 coats of high build 2-k primer. Block sand and if it smooths out everthing, then your ready to paint.
