I own a 1998 5.4 expy with 150,000 miles on it. It has treated me fine for all these years except for tonight. I was driving about a 4 hour drive and when i was almost home i heard an awful noise coming from the engine compartment. So i pulled over and it heard a noise that sounded like air was escaping somewhere to the rear of the engine, like a high pressure air. The check engine light came on and it was an extremely rough idle. This all happened at once as i was driving. Any ideas would be awsome! Thanks!
Check the vacuum hoses on the top of the engine behind the black plastic cover on the air intake manifold. I had one that made a 90 soften up due to oil (I think it came from the PCV) don't hold me to that. It had collapsed in the middle and caused the same symptons you are describing. I just went to NAPA and used a 4 inch piece of fuel hose to replace it. That was 50k miles ago. So far works good lasts long time.
No i havent done the plugs recently, i think that may actually be the problem come to think of it. I checked the pcv valve and all the hoses and they were not the source.
