When in Overdrive, 50mph+, throttle response is not good at all. Sometimes I have to push the throttle until the engine revs up almost 1000RPMS instantly.
The thing is, when in Drive, acceleration is GREAT. As soon as I give it gas, it goes! I would love to drive it this way, but I see it's 2800RPM @70mph instead of like 1900RPM (Overdrive). So it would probably drink more gas.
Is this normal? Or do I have a problem? Or should I ignore it? (Heck, the truck runs!)
Is the engine just revving 1000 rpm, or is the tranny downshifting when you give it some throttle? Overdrive isn't meant for anything but cruising and very light acceleration. That's why there is a kickdown cable on the tranny. If you mash down the gas pedal, it forces a downshift, which will cause the engine to rev up as well. In my F150, it will even drop from OD to 2nd up to about 50mph or so. Your top mileage will be the lowest speed where it will hold top gear going straight and level, usually around 40-45mph. And, yes, OD does help with mileage, but it puts the engine below its optimum power band. That's why you would need to drop to 3rd for passing/heavy acceleration, hills and towing.
