New Motor Question
To make a long story short I am in need of a new motor for my 94 XLT 4X4. The head gasket has started to fail and I also have had low oil pressure for about the last 25k miles. The motor has seen allot of towing of a 4-7 thousand lb trailer over the years so it is just its time. Since my 94xlt 4X4 is in otherwise great condition I would like to swap the motor. (I just had a new Trans installed last summer) I have also replaced many of the rubber ware items and steel lines around the engine compartment in the last couple of years just as a matter of normal maintenance. The other factor is I don’t want car payments so a motor swap seems to make a lot of sense into a vehicle that is otherwise sound.
What I want to know is what years are the 4.0 v6 motors motors interchangeable with. I would like to get the newest and lowest mileage motor I can. I don’t mind changing out the intake and exhaust manifolds and accessories however I would like to stay away from changing the heads as if I go that far I may as well rebuild the motor I have and I just don’t want to do that now.
I have a complete shop where we build and prep our race cars to do the motor change in so there are no real issues in doing the change in terms of tools hoists lifts etc. The only thing that looks to be a bit of a hassle is access to the bolts that connect the motor to the trans. They look to be a real PITA. However closer inspection reveals that removal of the upper intake would make access much better.
Any insight or tips on a motor change in a 1994 model year Explorer would be helpful and again the motor interchange question is most important so I can start shopping for one. If time and $$$$$ allowed it would be fun to put a v8 in it but reality is I just want to put it back in its stock form. It has lasted this long and has done everything I asked it to do so why change a thing.
