LAST EDITED ON 07-Jan-01 AT 07:13 PM (EST)[p]I have a 92' F-250 xlt 5.8l efi with power everything. Recently the battery light came on while the engine was running, went off when I fed it some fuel. It flashed one more time at idle, again it disappears when I rev a little. This was two days ago and it hasn't done it since. However, now the battery light come on and stays on when I have the key in the on position without the engine running. It goes off as soon as I start the engine. The engine starts just as fast as it always has. Does anybody else's battery light come on when the key is on but the engine is off?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
The battery light is suppose to come on, since the engine is not running the alternator is not charging, Your problem is that the brushes on the alternator are worn and will need to be replaced soon. As long as the light does not stay on all the time you should be ok, but keep in mind that you will have to replace the alternator soon.
Daywalker, I have the same truck and have had the same thing happen. The above listing is correct. The days are numbered for your alternator. I have had the alternator go before on my 92' f-250 several times. Most of the time I just noticed the idiot guage showing no charge when the alt was on its way out, but one peticular time the light came on instead. Everything still operated properly but I was told that the alternator was getting tired and that it was just a matter of time. My truck is used for everything from plowing to jump-starting other pieces of equipement so the charging system must be up to snuff. Good luck
I had the same problem on my 94 with a 4.9L. I had the alt replaced and 4 months later the alt caught on fire, when the truck was unattended just sitting in my driveway. As it turned out when the shop replaced the alt, they neglected to replace the electrical connector that came with the new alt. Luckly my wife smelled something burning, and I went to check it out I was able to put out the fire before too much damage occured. Moral of this story is to check or at least inquire about the connector with the shop that replaces it. Good luck to you.
