Ignition Options?

O.K. Plans as of now of course are subject to change due to an addiction to horse power.
390
E brock RPM intake
670 street avenger carb
901 cam,(possibly a more agreesive cam in the future)
Hedman headers
Now on to the ignition question, I would like advice on what to run, I was thinking of D.U.I. but please chime in my FEriends.
I know for a fact the stock dizzy is holding my truck back right now and it sucks.

Ok, opinions ahead...

Since you want more power, I'd run 360 pistons or TRW L2291's. Then, change the cam up to a Crane 343941 for more power. Port, or have ported, your heads. The rest looks good.

FWIW, my new 390 with the Crane 343941 and the TRW L2291's is kind of pickey when it comes to gas, and timing. You have to kind of play with it so it doesn't ping. Now I did get my problems solved, but I think any smaller cam and my build would have been SOL. I think if you're running higher compression with the 901 cam you WILL have problems pinging. I know I would have if I had run any smaller a cam. Just a heads up.

Now to the ignition. I'm running a stock distributor, vacuum advance, coil, and points. It works JUST FINE. Now, I dont know what's wrong with your distributor, but you can buy a lot of sets of points for the price of anything you'd do to change it. Now, quality of points ranges from absolutely horrible to good. The best IMO is Blue Streak. Very well constructed and stable at high RPM's. I got mine at Napa.

Another heads up. DO NOT use an Accel Super Stock coil. I have one and it left me stranded several times before I figured out it stopped working when it heated up a little bit. Pop the stock one back on and everything's great. I'd get a good quality coil. IMO if you spend less than $50 on a coil, you're probably getting junk. Take it how you see it, just my experiences.

If you absolutely need to dump the points for whatever reason, I hear Pertronix works good.

Thanks rusty, I just think the dizzy is wearing out is all, and besides I want to have the advance come on alot faster than stock, also never heard about the 360 pistons, I thought of running the 390 car piston like what was in the GT mustangs back in the day.

Well you see, most 390 car pistons and 360 pistons are the same thing. Some 390 pistons were dished, but just getting 360 pistons makes sure you get the right thing. 1.776" compression height, no dish, 4 valve reliefs.

A bad or poor quality set of points can make it seem like your distributor is worn out. I'd check it by taking the cap off, and seeing if you can move the shaft. (I mean back and forth, not rotate) If you can, it's shot. What that does, is the shaft moves around and it affects the dwell of the points. Your timing advances / retards randomly. The more the shaft moves, the worse it gets. If it gets bad enough, it can cause your engine to stumble, or not run. That said, many distributors run hundreds of thousands of miles without a problem.

I'd take it apart, clean it up, check it for wear, and put a good set of points and new condensor in it before blowing money on a system like the Pertronix. Set the dwell to spec and you'll probably be surprised at how well it works. Dwell spec if I remember right is 28 degrees. If you want the timing to come in sooner, get a lighter set of advance springs. There are also adjustments in the distributor for how much total advance, plus there should be a couple of holes in the vacuum advance arm so you can set the total amount of that. There is adjustability there.
