changing a fuel pressure regulator

it's a 1990 v8 302 ci. the regulator sits way in the back. got 2/3 screws out but the third can't get to cuz of how the fuel lines bent.

would it be better to take out the fuel rail. and how would i do that.

i took out the air hoses, tagging the ignition wires and getting them out of the way

should be two small screws on the side of the intake that holds the fuel ratl down. remove the screws, if injectors aren't stuck, you should be able to wiggle the rail back and forth, while pulling up at the same time, this should give you enough room to get to the 3rd screw for the regulator.

there are four screws holding the fuel rail. the front two were easy but the back two are hard to get without taking off the upper manifold.

i already took out the throttle body and where it meets the manifold it's really nasty. took off the throttle sensor and the iac. can i just clean the whole thing with carb cleaner. around the "canister purge ports" there's lots of black stuff you can see from the inside

Those screws are very tough to intially break loose, they may have thread locker on them. Don't tear the fuel rail apart, can't you find some tools that will get in there???? You don't want to risk damaging injectors at 30 to 50 bucks each, or even the o-rings. The orings are sometimes too old and hard to reseat correctly and must be replaced. Maybe a small allen key with a small metal tube for torque. Maybe one of those wrenches with the plumbers snake type(flexible) shaft. Be creative, make a tool, find a tool that fits the bolt, and cut it, bend it, whatever it takes.

On my 93 it was replaced under recall and the dealership did it in the parking lot in about 10 minutes if that. The fuel rail was left in place so I know it can be done that way. I just put an adjustable fuel regulator on my Merkur XR4TI and did it in place as well but it's a different engine.

the screws that held my 91 fpr in where allen screws. i think that they were 4 mm but not 100% on that. i took whatever size allen key and cut it down to about an inch and then use a 4 mm wrench to turn it. i think it took about 5 mins to rig that up after fighting for about an hour to get it off. and the new one was on in about 2 mins flat.

i took it all apart. had a hard time with the injectors till i got new O-rings. the new ones helped seat the injecters in the fuel rail nice but not so nice in the manifold. it felt like the fuel rail bolts will be holding the injectors in place. which sucks cuz one of the bolts broke off in the manifold.

i'm charging the battery now. truck's been sitting since december cuz i don't have a garage. i'll try it tomorrow just to activate the fuel pump and see if anything leaks. oh and i found my pcv valve on the back of the manifold. but it doesn't go anywhere. i guess there's some hose missing and i'm guilty of a felony.
