What's a Safe EGT level?
I've got an 04 F350 HD version, big cab, long bed. Just put an edge performance kit in it, AIRAID Hi Flow air intake with a 4"/5" Bully Dog exhaust. It comes out of the turbo with a 4" then goes to a 5" a few feet ahead of the muffler. At normal hw cruising speed, my EGT (pre turbo) seems to be running around 850 ~ 900 degrees. But if I jump on it, and boy does it have lots of power now, it hits 1250 degrees easily. From talking with a co-worked, I understnad that's the danger zone. The Edge I think right away backs off, but it seems like it hits that mark pretty easily...so much so that I wonder if I can safely use all that extra power I now have. I'm still running the Edge on it's lowest power setting above the factory levels. If I put 'er in hi performance it smokes the rear tires and hits 1250 even easier.
Any comments most welcomed.
This is a very hot topic and often debated in these forums. You'll find those that say 1300+ will cook a turbo and others that say you must run in the upper 1300's for 20-30 seconds to do any damage. From all that I have read it seems the turbo is actually less of a worry than the pistons, valves, etc. Also, it seems that the damage is cumulative in that hitting high temps repeatedly for 30 seconds or more will eventually add up.
I'd recommend PM'ing PSD 60L Fx4 and discussing this w/ him. I recall a posting in which he and SBV45 (& others) discussed EGT's in depth. If you look at his recent post titled "Engine #2" you'll get an idea of what can happen. I've spoken to Matt on the phone and he's got lots of knowlege to share concerning th 6.0.
