Code reader recomendation

I have a 97 Exp EB with 109,000 on it. Zero problems till I made that last payment. Now all of a sudden I have a "Check engine" light coming on. I pulled the battery cable and after 1/2 hours reattatched it. Went 99 miles and light came back on. From all I've read here it is most likely a vacuum leak at the elbow mentioned in numerous posts located in the sensor on top back, center of the engine, or O2 sensors that are bad. Can't tell till I get the code read. Any suggestions on what type to buy?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP GUYS...............

Why guess and cover up the problem (by pulling the power to erase the codes ?!?!?!)

AUTOZONE reads codes for free.....

For OBDII, check out Innova 3100 www.codereader.com

It's suppose to read beyond generic 'P0' codes and support domestic as well as most import.

I used it already in our Volvo V70 and also on a friends late 90's Toyota 4Runner.

Was nervous about plugging it at first for fear of computer melt-down but it worked ok.

I have not tried on my XP yet but domestics are supposted to be given.

Good luck

I just purcheased this version for my laptop http://www.autoenginuity.com/. I am trying to chase down an EVAP problem on my S10 Blazer. I would prefer a handheld over a laptop but could not find a handheld for less than $250 that can display live data of sensors. Getting the code does not even get you 50% of the way to solve the problem. My EVAP system has two solenoids and a pressure sensor, you need to be able to view signals of the system to diagnose and fix the problem. I maybe using it this weekend and will share my experiences when I do. I have asked your same question many times on many forums and only got opions no real hands on experience.

You may also want to check out these sites obddiagnostics.com, scantool.net, and digimoto.com. Personally I would want the laptop version to make it portable, so you can analyze record sensor readings while driving. You may also want something that both ISO ready and can read your format, because in a few years everything is reporting in the ISO format.
