Red face '95 Explorer Stutter At Speed

My '95 Explorer (4.0 of course) seems to have an engine stutter while maintaining speed. It happens at highway and street speeds but not while accelerating or braking. I replaced the fuel filter the other day which seemed fairly clogged, but the problem is still there. It may be slightly better or maybe I'm just hopeful. Plugs and Wires are new within the year and Throttle Position Sensor, Air Filter, EGR, and the EGR control module are about 6 months old.<O

Anyone have any ideas?

Cool

I have the same problem with my Explorer 95 for more than two years. Changed TPS, DPFE, fuel filter, plugs, wires, etc. without any results. The problem is always at cruising speed and I suspect something telling the transmission to downshift for about two or three seconds. Problem is very intermittent. No solution at this time.

Have you pulled the engine codes? If so, did it reveal anything?

dpinson - I had the exact same thing a few months ago, the transmission would actually down-shift and up-shift right away. But for me, changing the TPS fixed that. Turns out I had a dead spot. With this problem I don't see any change in RPMs but there is a discernable flutter feeling.

marragtop - I haven't pulled the codes yet. I'm going to clean the MAF tonight as per Jharger's instructions from thread "'91 stumbles/shudders when accelerating or constant speed" (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=25581).

To me, this feels like a fuel or air problem, but I have nothing to base that on.

Cool

The engine code I got referred to a past problem with the DPFE. I change it with without any results.

Thank you

Mine was throwing the DPFE code at the same time I changed the TPS so I replaced that to and I don't remember that doing anything either, but that was months ago.

Today I cleaned the filaments in the MAF sensor but that didn't help with my current problem either. I suppose I will have to pull the codes and see if I come up with anything.

I already change the TPS and check the MAF. I suspect a sensor telling the transmission to downshift because the problem never last more than few seconds and is very intermittent and seem to be independant of temperature condition.

I pulled the codes using my crude actron scanner.

536 (I didn't do the Brake On/Off test)
538
632

and then during WOT:

538

Any ideas?

I've been driving with this problem for some time now. I think I've narrowed the problem down to happening roughly between 40 and 50 mph. I've tried water remover in the gas tank but that hasn't helped at all.

From your description and based on what you have done, it appears you are experiencing a torque converter lock/unlock problem. You stated you already replaced the TPS so unless the new one is also bad, you can rule that out. But look into the VSS sensor on the transmission speedo gear housing. Its signal is also used in conjumction with tps and other to allow computer to determine if lock up is to be signaled to the transmission. Other things inclide a bad soleniod in trans, leaking TCC lockup servo valve in the trans and of course a failing torque converter. The code 632 is trans related. The others appear to be more garbage at this time. Clear and repeat the test following all steps precisely.

I know it's been a while but I just solved this problem. It turned out to be a wire/plug problem. I changed the plugs and wires this weekend and found on one plug there was an etched in grove, that lined up with carbon tracing on the inside of the boot, where my spark was grounding on the head. This was unlike other spark problems I've had; this one was "consistently random." Had it been skipping on that cylinder all the time it would have been easier to diagnose.

Thanks to everyone who helped out.
