Guys, I am new to this board and new to ford trucks . I just bought a 1970 f100 long box with a 302. I would liek to use it to tow my Boss car. I would like to upgrade the suspension, brakes and steering. Can u guys point me in the right direction?
Honestly, by the time you spend the money to upgrade all the components of that old truck, you could have bought a newer truck with power disc brakes, a towing package with a better suspension, and power steering for less money. Just my two cents.
BUT, I would not have a year matching truck to tow around my 1970 BOSS 302 mustang to car shows. The truck is going to be painted Grabber orange with blackout paint and stripes just like my boss. So... YuP!
You'd have to swap in a disc front axle from a later (up to 79) F-100 or F-150, along with the master cylinder. If you want power disc brakes, you'll need a booster as well. Probably best to get it all from one truck.
Suspension - have a good spring shop re-arch your leaf springs, or just get new springs and heavy duty shocks all around. Also, if you're going to put a lot of weight in the back, think about getting air bags.
Steering - I believe you can transplant the pump and gearbox from a PS equipped truck. I'm not sure what belt you could run it off of, though.
All this would probably be easier if you get a newer truck with a blown motor or rusty body for cheap with all the parts you want on it already (except for shocks/springs) and then just pick what you want to transplant. If there's enough left over to part off, you might even make some of your money back.

Wow, what a combonation... That would look great with a '70 Boss on the trailer... Definitly worth the investment, when you put it like that.
I agree with the previous post, if it doesn't have it, you will want power steering and front disc brakes. The parts can come off any '67-'79 2wd 1/2 ton pickup. There are tech articles about these swaps, check them out - link at top right of page.
Rear gears in the 4.10-3.50 range would be good. Overloads or airbags in the rear is a good idea. Also trailer brakes and a quality brake controler are a MUST.
Search through the past posts, these swaps have been discussed many times in the 67-72 forum, you will find lots of reading.
First, I would replace every brake components including all lines, rubber and steel. At the same time I would add in (about $120) a four wheel hydraulic brake lock as an anti-thief measure and parking brake. www.brakelock.com.
I would go with power steering first, a good brake controller, and then disc brakes. Four wheel drum brakes while towing something on a wet surface is not the best handling combination. I know that from experience.
If you think you need it, Firestone air bags and 4.10 or 4.56 gears.
