a few days ago as i took off in my 94 b3000 i heard and felt a loud clunk. it continued as i rolled it into a parking spot. i checked underneath the truck and the only thing that i noticed was that the center support bearing was pretty worn out. i decided to drive it very slowly to a shop about 2 blocks away and the noise contiued the whole way there but it got quieter. the mechanic checked it out the next day and said that he heard a noise coming from the rear end and recommended me to a driveline shop. I decided to try to drive it home and to my surprise the loud clunking noise went away but there was still a clicking/light clunking noise when i would change gears or let off the gas while still in gear. I dont think that the mech. payed much attention to my truck since the shop was very busy that day and they didnt seem interested in fixing it. So today i change out the 3 rear u-joints and the center support bearing and it helped out a bit but theres still that clicking/light clunking noise when i change gears or let off the gas while still in gear. it doesnt seem to be coming from the rear end but more from the middle of the truck. other than that it drives just find which is why i dont think its the rear end and im very confused now ;banghead;
PLEASE HELP!!!
(BTW- i have a 94 b3000, 4x4, 5-speed, supercab)
No i havent changed the differential fluid yet but i think i'll do that tommorrow. thanks for the reply!
do you think the transfer case could have anything to do with it or does that only come into play when in 4x4?
i am not familiar with 4x4 trucks so i dont know about the t case.
check the sticker on the inside of the drivers side door and look at the axle code, if there are two numbers then it is an open diff, but if there is a number and a letter, then it is limited slip and a fiction modifier is required in the gear oil.
***************************************** * CHECK THE TRANNY FLUID LEVEL ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!! * *****************************************
My 96 Explorer Sport did this with my wife driving it. Turned out it was leaking tranny fluid from the transmission into the transfer case. $2,500 tranny rebuild as a result. Borke a geartooth off of the Cluster gear, Broke a gear on the pilot shaft, toasted pilot shaft and tailshaft bearings from poor lubrication.

The driveline on my ol 94 4x4 4.0 5 speed seemed to develop some slop as the years went by. I just attributed it to the rear end aging and the miles racking up. I replaced u joints; there was no change. I also don't think it's the transfer case. In the end, I just learned to live with it.
For yours, I'd pop the rear end cover and have a look at the spyder gears and associated hardware. Also look for any metal in the bottom of the case and in the fluid. And yes, do check tranny fluid fast. The 5 speed tranny uses some neoprene shift rail plugs that swell and leak over time. Often the leak goes undetected as the fluid is leaking only while driving. Let us know what you find.
well i took it to a driveline shop today and they opened up the diff. cover and found that the pin was broken. luckily the pin didnt come out and cause even more damage so it might not be too much to fix. they said that they will have to replace the pin and maybe the spider gears and hopefully thats it but we'll see tommorrow. They also said that the axles were not in the best shape but will still last me a little while longer. they kind of confused me because i've read on TRS that the 7.5 would be able to handle up to 33 inch tires and im only running a 3.0L but the guy at the shop said that the 7.5 is too small to handle bigger tires and it wont last long especially if i off road it. they had a new 8.8 form an explorer but they said it would run me about 1500 to buy and install it with 4.56 gears in it. i thought about it but its a bit too much for me. Also when swapping to the 8.8 is it supposed to have disc or drum brakes? The one they had there has disc.
I did have the tranny leaking when i first got it and got the plugs sealed on there good and it hasnt leaked since.
Thanks for the replies and i'll keep ya'll updated.
