I just purchased a new 2005 F250 KR CC 6L and need to run cables between the engine compartment and the cab. I noticed a hole above the wire-harness holes on the drivers side. It currently has some aluminum tape over it and on the inside has a square cutout in the same area.
Does anyone know what the part number would be of a large round rubber grommet would fit this? I want to open up the hole, but don't want any water inside. It appears to be approx 2" in diameter.
I know of the four pass-thru wires located above the hole as well.
I found a hole on the passenger side, right at the floor in the corner that I was able to just fit a 7 wire cable (each wire was 10 gauge)through. The grommet worked well to keep the wire from fraying.
I used the same hole, it is easily accessable by removing several rear bolts from the fender liner and pulling it back. Using a flashlight into the hole someone on the inside of the truck should see the light/wire comgin through and grab it if you remove the kick panel on the passenger side.
I have a bunch of wires coming through the big hole at the top of the driver's side firewall. 2awg power, couple 10awg power, couple 14awg for relays for lights and stuff, large three conductor strobe cable. Just used a little electrical tape when I was done and I haven't had any leaks. I don't think water gets that high up your firewall much.
I also use that smaller hole by the passenger's foot. I throw the cable out from inside the cab, it will fall down behind the fender liner, then I use a string to pull it up to the top. I think I only have a strobe cable through it now, but I used to have a 10awg power or two through there.
The hole in the driver's side is probably the one where the clutch master cylinder pushrod would go through the firewall if you had a manual trans. Last time I passed some wires through that hole (on a 2000 X) I just drilled through the center of the plastic plug that was in the hole and used that as my grommet. If you have a lot of wires though, you'll probably want a real grommet.
The X had sound deadening foam on the inside against the firewall, but there was a rectangular cutout in it where this hole was, so I removed that.
Thanks everyone. Currently there is no grommet in this hole, just some tape and the knock out on the inside. Thats a good spot for me to get cabing thru, but a grommet would be nice, guess I will ping the dealer and see if it shows up on the parts books.
You can also try hardware stores. We have a huge ACE here in Tucson, and the owner is a car nut I hear, and he carries a lot of automotive hardware, along with assorted size grommets. All of the ACE stores that I have been in here have grommets in assorted sizes.
Yeah, i wouldn't want to go buy a grommet from the dealer. They'll probably charge 10 bucks for it. My dad just got me a water neck, and it cost $70! Good thing he broke it. Anyway, as mentioned before, check ACE, or you can get a whole grommet kit from Jc Whitney with a bunch of different sizes.
