I have an 89' 302, I just put it back together from replacing the head gaskets. I adjusted the timing to what the manuel said, so I hope. When I start the engine it idles about 2200-2500 rpms, then goes down to about 1100 rpms. I start to drive and come to a stop then it idles low around 500-600 rpms then back up to 700 rpms. Is this a timing problem? If so how do i set the timing correctly?
Just to make sure, did you unplugged the spout connector?
Mine was doing the same thing, not timing related. I can't say when exactly, but it stopped after gradually changing the O2 sensor, TPS, plugs, rotor cap, cleaning the throttle body and IAC. It can be many things. if your idle is set too low, the engine will naturally rev-up because it gives a burst not to die (but I'm not professional here). I read in the chilton book that timing should be 700 rpm or so.
It's a connector comming out of the wire harness of the distributor.
When you remove it, the computer is not controling the timing advance. Unplug, set the timming at 10BTC, and replug. It will make a difference, made a huge one for me when I changed my engine and didn't do it correctly. But your symptoms don't seem to be related with timming. But your still got to do it correctly
