D3 heads

What does it take to make D3VE heads to preform well? I recently bought a rebuilt short block that I was planing to use the C9VE heads off of my existing 460. I would need to have a complete rebuild on them. I since have found several sets of rebuilt D3VE heads on ebay, that are far less than rebuilding my own.

Am I better off rebuilding my C9 heads?

I want to run this truck on pump gas with no problem, and am afraid the C9 heads might give me too high CR. The truck is a '79 F250 4X4 extended cab used for towing and daily driving.

the d3s flow well but they just have low compression. if you want drivability and no pinging i would just use the d3s with a good valve job and cleaning. save the c9s for a performance build.

From listening to the people here porting the exhaust ports is a must and camming with a cam that gets the exhaust out is also important. Remember low compression doesn't mean it will run better. I beleive getting the compression up to 9.5 to 1 would be better for fuel mileage, smog, and performance. I was told my 86 F250 460 stock maybe lucky to have 7.9 to 1 compression. It will run on 80 octane gas the problem is it still is $2.50/gal.
