I have a 82 F150 4x4 with a 302 in it. the engine has 10000 miles
on it since the rebuild. I am having trouble with the headers not bolting on tightly and leaking exhaust. I have tried different gaskets and still nothing. It keeps leaking and making that sound like there is a hole in the header, but i have checked both sides and found no holes. Any help would be great.
ROL makes about the best gasket on the market and Buffalo is a close second. Although, my son has had good luck with the cheap gaskets off the shelf from Advance Auto. You need to look at two things. First, is your header straight. A lot of times a cheaper header will warp, especially if it develops an exhaust leak early. you can somewhat remedy that situation by cutting a section of flange out of the headers between each runner. That makes each pipe separate. Second, you need to periodically tighten your header bolts, especially if you've just installed gaskets. Usually you want to run your engine about 1 hour, re-tighten the bolts, then every day for the next 3-4 days, then once a week for the next 3-4 weeks, then check once a month.
4x4F150, I have had the best luck with stock Ford gaskets. They are a thin tin type gasket. I have had problems with gaskets that are thicker or spongier. Constant tightening of the header bolts. Non-stop. I don't know how well they would work with your headers, but it is a possibility. Just a thought. good luck.
