Speedo gear replacement

I changed out the ring & pinion from 3.55 to 4.10 ratio. Thought I could change the speedo gear on the trans end of the cable to recalibrate the speedo error, however the parts person at Fordparts.com said the gear is part of the output shaft on the trans. Has any of you done this, or will I need to take it to a shop?

There are several color coded speedo gears that you can use to to recalibrate the speedometer . All you have to do it remove the speedometer cable from the output shaft , remove the clip that holds the gear to the cable & install a gear that will correct your speedometer . It wont be entirely accurate , but most speedometers are off 2 or 3 mph .

Try an 18 tooth speedo gear drive, the pink one, that's what I use with 4:10 gears and 32" tires. My speedometer is only a mile or two faster over stock.

Greg, I could be wrong but if you just changed the ring and pinion and not tire size then you don't need to recal the speedo. Can anyone verify this?

Speedo gear replacement

Seems to me changing the gear ratio but not the tire size that the error would be the greatest. However the main reason that I needed the gear change is that I went to a 31" tall tire from the stock 235/75/15, about 27" tall. This actualy makes the 4.10 gears more like 3.73's.
So it looks like I can just change the gear on the cable. right?
thanks! -greg

LAST EDITED ON 23-Jan-01 AT 11:57 AM (EST)[p]On the pre 92 trucks, the speedo runs off the tranny, hence any changing of tire size or gears would require recalibration. In 92, they switched to an electronic speedo that runs off of the ring gear in the rear end, so you'd only have to recalibrate if you switched tire size.

More than likely all you'll have to change is the end gear on the cable. You might have to change to drive gear in the tranny, if your speedo is off too much.

Your Ford parts guy should know what you need, tell him what color you currently have and how much your speedo is off by.
