Gas mileage / Timing?
I just bought a 1988 Ford F-150 4x4 5.0 L The day I got it I was told to take it the place where they do there Texas state inspections, I was there for 3 hours watching them work on it trying to get it to pass the exhaust test, they were messing with the timing and everything else. Well they finally got it to pass. I took it to the other side of Dallas, about 30 miles from my house and it started running bad after it died in the middle of traffic I got out to look and they did not tighten the bolt on the distributor. I set it by ear and filled it up with gas. Ok after all of that here is my problem I was getting great gas mileage and thought wow after I timed it right it would be great. So I bought a timing light and set it at factory specs 10%btdc. Now my gas mileage is real bad. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Except telling me to time it by ear again
I have never gotten as good mileage or performance from stock timing as I have from slightly advanced timing.
Set it at 12 deg., and if that isn't working, go up 2 deg. at a time until it runs good without spark knocking.
I like the ear and vacuum gauge method, with a timing light to confirm what I ended up at.
