Lifter Replacement

I've finally decided to replace my lifters as I think a few may be collapsing. My repair manual tells me that I must install a new camshaft at the same time as I install new lifters. Is this really that big of a deal, since I am doing this at home in my driveway replacing the camshaft will make the job take twice as long, not to mention twice as expensive. Also has anyone here replaced their lifters before? I'm just curious as to how much trouble i'm getting myself into, and wondering if there are any tips or things I should be careful with. My truck is a '90 F150 302 5pd

Thanks

Lifter Replacement

You can put new lifters on an old cam, but you can't/shouldn't put old lifters on a new cam. New lifters will seat themselves to the old cam.

As for chamging the lifters, its not an easy job to do with the heads still in place. The heads hang out over the lifters so you can't pull straight up on them. I have changed lifter with the heads in place, with a pair of visegrips but you risk breaking the old lifters. If you break an old lifter be sure you get all the pieces out or else you will have some major problems later.
