Talking Knock Sensor?

My Haynes manual says there is a knock sensor on my engine. Does anyone have any more information becasue I get a lock of knock right now and maybe I should replace my knock sensor.

need to know why you are getting the knock first. what motor, how many miles on it. whats the oil pressure read. does it knock when cold/warm? is it knocking all the time or only when you step on the gas. the knock sensor is for spark knock (pinging)

The pinging is almost always when I accelerate, but it doesn't happen everytime, but it is much more pronounced when towing a boat.

This may not have anything to do with it, BUT, I have noticed that my '95 5.8L w/151k miles automatic and I do not know the oil pressure, runs better on 89 octane gas than 87, and I just filled it up with 93 octane for grins and after some in-town driving, it seems to run even better on 93 octane than 89. I thought these pigs ran on 87 octane? Also, there was zero pinging, but I will try it again tomorrow.

I have not checked for codes, but I have replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, new rotor, cap, had the injectors cleaned, oil/filter change, new air filter, EGR valve, EGR Valve Position sensor, IAC motor, PCV filter, Oxygen sensor, Cannister Purge Valve and the ACT. I have not had the timing checked.

You can check to see if the knock sensor is working by A) pulling the codes or B) tapping on the block (CAREFULLY) with a hammer. A properly functioning knock sensor will "feel" the seismic change and tell the PCM to retard the spark timing.

The 5.8 (351) did not come with a knock sensor. THe 302 was the one that did.

Yeah but I'm sure he's reading the Haynes manual for the correct engine in his truck. Nowhere is it mentioned that we are defintely dealing with a 5.8 or a pre-92 model truck.

here ya go Grey, i didnt catch it either.

Broncobudy, sounds like you have taken the hard route in figuring out your problem. checking for codes is easy using a paper clip and 15mins of your time. fordfuelinjection.com gives step by step instructions. always check for codes before you start replaceing sensors thats why they are there. also hook up a mechanical oil gauge to get a true reading of your pressure. and get a timing light and make sure it set at 10*btdc with spout removed. also what plugs and wires did you use and are the wires routed so they are not touching or crossing each other especially around #7 & #8 cylinders?

Ahh, ok. I was a bit befuddled by PFOGLE's apparent clarevoyancy. The haze is thinning now.
