Erratic guages
hey there...my '86's guages have never worked propperly and the previous owner said he never had a working fuel guage. It is not the tank sender because the tank was replaced with a new sender two years ago. There is power to the guage because sometimes it reads just above the E line especially on a full tank. just wondering if anyone has had similar problems and what they have done to correct it. I know the stock guages aren't great, but I would like to try to get them working before I end up buying aftermarket. thanks

Erratic guages
capttim, I have almost the same problem, only my fuel gauge reads full at fillup and drops really fast when it hits empty I can go 150miles on front tank and 190 miles on back tank and alternator never leaves the center mark the back tank worked fine when I bought the truck only the front one was bad but it didn't take long for the back one to go too I figured it had to be the sender they are really cheaply built with that little wire winding in there so maybe yours is bad again. and they are expensive to buy. Capt Tim, Are all of the guages not working properly? If so, it is very possible that the voltage regulator for the guages needs to be replaced. It drops the volts down from 12 to a lower voltage in order for the guages to work properly. Also, check for bad ground behind the dash. Just a thought. Good luck.
