C6 Issues

C6 Issues
My 82 F-100 has some trans problems i belive. The tail shaft that the driveshaft slips over is loose, and can be wiggled from side to side? Is this a normal thing, or am i looking at something busted here?
Also today i found that the transmission has gotten water in it somehow. Could this have hurt anything, as the transmission has just been sitting, and not being used for awhile now. I also pulled the transmission pan down and looked inside it, other than some water/trans fluid mix, it looked fine and still shiny inside, no rust. Did find some small metal fragments in the pan though...about sand-grain size.
Any input is appreciated.
