red hot headers

I just finished rebuild on my 460 and got it in my truck and finally started it today to break in. Upon running the engine I found the headers would heat up rapidly and start to glow bright red. I have installed Edelbrock performer intake, 750 cfm carb, and cam and lifter package along with a set of hedman headers. Also block has been bored out 30 thou. Is it just running to lean or have I missed something? the temp gauge is reading normal and my raytek temp gun gets about 500 degrees plus on the headers and about 200 degrees on the heads. That is just about when I shut it down for fear of overheating. These temps are also at about 2000 rpm, to break in the cam. Oh yeah I had set of glass packs on but removed to see if there was too much backpressure but this didn't help. any ideas please.

you could be lean, timing can be off too. But the main thing is, you have no airflow on the headers as you would if you were driving. Its a good idea to get a couple fans blowing on them during the breakin.

Yeah, my timing is off it diesels when I shut it down. I have about 10 minutes on cam break in should I finish that before adjusting carb or set up fans ang finish cam break in?

I'd finish the cam break in before fiddling with settings.
