A friend of mine has a 97 F250 7.3 that needs a little work, he claims that the vacuum pump needs replaced because the brakes are not working properly. Has anyone else had this problem and how much does the pump cost.
I replaced my vaccum pump this winter on my '97 F250 7.3. If I was using the brakes hard and long they would lose power and you would really have to stand on them to get any braking. If you ran along for awhile and not have to use them, they would build back up again. So I think that my pump was working some what just not enough to keep up. I did take my truck to Midas, they couldn't figure it out. They replaced the pads and shoes . They also tried to sell me a new master cylinder, but I already had about $1200. into it so I said no.
After posting on FTE and asking for help. I was pointed to the vacume pump. I replaced it for about $130. and that solved my problems. I guess if you take a positive look at it I also got all my brakes replaced too.

does the brake light come on when hes driving it?? on the vaccume assist brake trucks you can pump the pedal a bunch of times fast and after about 10 seconds the brake light will come on. and you will hear the pump get louder makes kinda a hooting noise. is the brake pedal hard? is the fluid clean? if the pedal is hard i would think it would be a booster. if the fluid is nasty dark, mettalic particals in it.....then need a full brake job master cylinder go through and rebuild the calipers and wheel seals....
