Would it be worth my while to install a cross-over pipe in my exhaust system? Right now I have headers, 2 1/4" pipes and turbo mufflers on a '72 302 with Summit "torque cam", Edelbrock manifold and 600 CFM carb.
I have read that it will make my truck quieter and increase torque. I would hope that it would also reduce that part throttle droning I get which I think is caused by the headers.
The X or H will make the exhaust alittle more quiet and smoother sounding. Drone is not from the headers, style of muffler like flow thru like glasspacks, large pipes, large tips or turn downs under the vehicle will cause drone.
Placement is as important as the X pipe itself. Put it as far foward as possible, preferably right after the headers, and enjoy the extra torque you will get.
With my experience and H-pipe will make it louder. The only place I could put the H-pipe (without hanging down showing from the side) on my truck was right in front of the mufflers right after the trans. Made it louder, but stopped the glass-pack 'cackle'. It now sounds VERY throaty, huge improvement. I too have 2-1/4" piping.
I wonder if the length of the H-pipe has any effect, or should it just be as short as possible. I would have to have one about 18" long due to the auto tranny and aux. gas tank location.
