Im looking at a 1977 F150 400 AT longbed 2wd the owner says it needs a new vacuum booster. Is this the whole cylinder and everthing else? What does it look like? How long does it take to replace and about how much does just the part cost? Could it be driven about 15 miles home in this condition or would it have to be trailered?
The vacuum booster is what the master cylinder bolts onto. This link will explain replacement.http://www1.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/0a/93/58/0900823d800a9358.jsp
It would be unsafe to drive untill the brakes are completely functional. Ask the current owner if it is just the booster or if the mastercylinder is bad also. They should sell for $80 to $100. With the mastercylinder figure about twice that plus having to bleed the mastercylinder and the entire system.
dont drive it without buying a new one! You know what happened when mine went bad? My truck stalled and it coasted right into traffic instead of stopping. Luckily i didnt get hit and nobody got hurt. This dosnt always happen when a booster goes bad though. But deffinatly fix it. It can be confusing to replace. Its not too hard though, i mean if i did it you can too. This was a while ago so my memory is a bit foggy. But i believe the hardest part was hooking up the linkage to the brake pedal. But i say go for it. Let me know if you need some help with it.
