E4OD decision time - advice?
94 F250 I6 220k mi, original E4OD.
With help from FTE folks, I isolated my shudder problem to a failing torque converter. The transmission is NOT slipping. Both confirmed by an independent Ford mechanic.
I'm in school fulltime (career change) and don't think I have the time to drop the trans and replace the TC. Paying someone else to replace it isn't cost effective. This truck was owned by a construction company and was assigned to one guy, near as I can figure. With 220k mi, I wonder how much life this E4OD has left.
That leaves two options: have it rebuilt or have a reman installed. The chain shops have terrible reputations, and I don't have reliable info on a good local rebuilder. I'm in north Georgia. Any solid info is appreciated.
There are also remans available. I've seen Ford, PATC in Louisiana and Jasper, among others.
Jasper is amazingly expensive, around $3k. (and they had quality problems with their engines a few years back)
I've seen quality problems with simple Ford parts, so I can only imagine how they can screw up a tranny.
Any info on PATC or other aftermarket E4ODs would also be welcome.

You may not need to drop the tranny -- with a tranny jack you can slide it backwards and that may be good enough for a TC replacement. Life is difficult to estimate at 220K, but if the tranny wasn't abused, neglected, or used for regular tow, it could be good for quite a while. With a cheap part (i.e. fuel pump) it makes sense to replace at a certain mileage, but with a tranny, I'd wait until it starts showing signs of wear. It could die within 5k, but it could go another 50k easily. So it depends on how much money you got, and can you miss a day or two while your car is being fixed, should the tranny fail?
