Looking for a Bed Cap

Hello all. I have been searching for a used bed cap for my 92 F150 Supercab shortbed truck. I am having no luck at all. I am still undecided on aluminum or fiberglass. Has anyone had a bad experience with either of these that they can share? Let me know what your opinions are on what to buy. Thanks

fiberglass! I think they're worth the extra cost, they look better and has better resale value. I buy them on my every truck I owned, except for my very first pickup which had aluminum shell (ugly looking, IMO) Best cap probably was the ARE brand. They seem to be solid built. I just got myself a ASTRO LEX cap. Not bad, it came with "pull" type handle which I find it annoying.

if youre going to be putting it on and off quite often, consider aluminum, they are quite a bit lighter. i have a 'glass cap that stays on unless i need to haul something really large. my first cap i bought new for a '88 ranger s/b, was around $800, my next cap was for a longbed full-size g.m. bought it at a auction for 300, both were glass. got lucky with this last truck as it had a cap on it from the previous owner, its a snugtop i think, has a rubber boot which seals up against the cab, have you tried your local classifieds or checked ebay? ive seen older caps practically givin away before.

Yeah, I check ebay almost every day. I only have one local dealer but they don't have any glass caps for my truck in stock. They would have to order one for me which means extra $. The problem with ebay is the only ones that I find on there that will fit my truck are too far away to pick up and the seller won't ship. Thanks for the info. I will just have to keep my eyes open I guess.

keep checking ebay.

I found a leer fiberglass topper for my 88 Shortbed and picked it up locally on ebay for a rediculously low $170. It is one of the newer Models. Cab height and all frameless windows. I believe the model is 700XL.

If you do find one on ebay, you can usually get a good deal since Ford Shortbeds are longer than all the other truck manufacturer's shortbeds. So a Ford Shortbed Topper will only fit a Ford Shortbed. Smaller audience means better price for you.

I got a nice aluminum cap for my 8' f250 bed for free from a used car dealer in my town. He usually removes the caps from most of the trucks he sells and they end up sitting around his lot. Granted my family has bought about 5 vehicles from him over the years. It is not fun, but I can slide it off the back of the bed and support it with my arms and head to remove it.
