Ford to Dump V10

APRIL FOOL!!!!!

OK, Fred, Wrench, Capt Charlie, Mountain Hound, and the rest of the "hard cores", you all can pull yourself up off the floor now.

It was a cruel joke, I know, and hope I didn't cause any heart attacks. But, then again, you guys are always putting your foot into those V10s and if that don't shock the ticker, my little joke won't.

Fact is, those palpitations one feels when stomping a V10 are probably good for the old ticker. My trouble is I'm always stomping someone else's V10 instead of my own. I may have to buy one just for health reasons.

A guy at work says to me the other day, "Hey, John, why do you always take the V10 to town instead of one of the smaller trucks?

"Fuel economy, Baby," I shrug with a BSEG.

Rengaw, That was good. A great April Fools joke. It feels funny to hear myself branded a V10 hardcore. I really am but I was a hardcore diesel guy for 11 years and I said all the ridiculous things like "real trucks don't have spark plugs" and "I'll never own another gasser again" so I get a real kick out of reading that drivel over at the 6.0 forum.
When I bought my first diesel I did it to get the max tow rating. It is so nice to be able to get a big, quiet, powerful, fuel efficient V10 that has a higher tow rating than my 04 lemon six. I love the different opinions of people all over this FTE site. You get the new diesel owners trashing the V10. ( I hope they don't have to eat crow the way I did) but I think what is even funnier is the 460 boys trashing our V10s. I had an 88 F250 460 , first year for EFI. that truck was 2000 pounds lighter and this V10 would blow the doors off that 460 but the icing on the cake is I drive this V10 the way I want and I still get 10 MPG short trips. The 460 would not even pull 6 MPG on short trips with a heavy foot like I use on my V10. It all makes for interesting reading and sometimes you have to wonder what some of the people on this site are smoking. Wrench.

If the guy really needs to ask why, you need to show him...not tell him!!

Nice joke. I was already thinking of a redneck remark to throw back at you before I even clicked into the thread!!

With a few modifactions, that 460 you just slammed will eat your V10 for lunch. Ive seen it. The 460 is an outragesouly powerful motor when properly tuned and modifed, you are not aware of the potnetional of the 460, it can be stroked and bored to over 700 cubic inches and make over 800HP, all you need is a bigger cam, larger intake, and headers and the 460 will eat anything for lunch, including the 6.0L freaks that think they are so fast.

Yes they can and when you pump one up it is no longer street-able or of any use as a towing hauling machine.. Now this is a V10 Forum and if we had the inkling and money the 4.6, 5.4, 6.8L can all be made racing radical also. In fact there are a few brave souls in here who experiment with blowers, nitrous, and all sorts of performance mods.

BUT my oh my you are in need of many hard lessons though if you think "With a few modifactions, that 460 you just slammed will eat your V10 for lunch."

There are an whole lot of use here that are well over 40 years old and have worn out our share of the monster 460s. And even a few of us can remember back fondly about that motor that is except the lousy fuel mileage, the tendency to seriously over heat, and yes the pesky way it would cough choke and buck if you dared to lug it down below 1800 rpm with a heavy load on it.

Your F100 sounds pretty cool BTW

Well the one thing you will never do with a 460 and that is get decent fuel mileage with it. My comments were for stock motors and I have never seen impressive 0-60 times with anything with a stock 460 in it. Sure you can through enough money at anything and make it go fast. Hell put a jet engine in something if you want to really go. I love it when people cling to past technology and trash the new stuff. That is one of the benefits of growing old. I bought your old junk when it was new and I am here to tell you the V10 is far superior in every way to the 460. Wrench.

Amen wrench, - my old man has a 96 F350 DRW with the 460 and in his own words "It's an awsome motor but every time I get near a gas station the darn thing gets a pull in the steering wheel". or his other thing is "It'll pass everthing but a gas station".

It does have good power and fred is right on with the rpm cough and choke thing. I think the 96' would get better mileage but when in OD the darn thing still runs at around 3200rpms at 70.

My V10 is definitally a far suppirior motor - better mileage, better power, and better drivablity. I do have to say the 460 is more accacable for maintanence though (just a downfall of technology).

I dont know, what are yall payin for those 2004 and 2005 Superdutys with all the bells and whistles? $38,000, $40,000, somewhere in that range im sure. You can get an old 460 and put 6 grand worth of parts into it and still be far below what yall are paying for a new Superduty. If I had the money, I would buy a 460 and modify the hell out of it, I guranette it would blow the doors of a V10. C'mon, 360HP on the new 05's? Thats it? Thats peanuts compared to what a 460 will put out with some upgrades.

I do know guys payin' the $38-40k for a truck (diesels), but my truck with my V10 in it only cost me $28k back in '00 (xlt package, leather is BAD in AZ or it would've been the Lariat). I'd have to go with the reliability of my V10 over any other motor I've ever had (which isn't saying much, but I've had a few other Ford V8's).

Anyways, I don't want to get into an argument over it, Ford rules no matter what engine!!

Huh? Geez, I'm not even a good negotiator and I got my 03 XLT 4x4 in 2002 for a little over $28,000.

As far as the merits of the 460...I'm sure you can throw money at it and make it perform. But don't forget, my money bought me a whole new truck, not just an engine. And in my opinion, while the previous few generations of Ford HD pickup trucks were good, the new ones are tons better. Higher load/trailer ratings. Better emissions/mileage. More comfortable on long trips, quieter, turn sharper etc etc etc...

Hell, I even like my stereo and all the gadgets, even my ESOF, and I ain't skeered to admit it!

I like the V10 alot, but I like the whole truck even better.
