Lauren was 19 yr. old and in college. This story takes place over the Christmas/New Year's holiday break. It was the Saturday before New Year's and it was about 1PM in the afternoon. Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An *UNMARKED* police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have 4 children (high school and college age) and have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather wait until they g et to a gas station, etc.. So Lauren had listened to her parents advice, and promptly called "#77" on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there where police cars where she was and there wasn't! He told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way. Ten minutes later, four cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground ... the man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew about the "#77" Cell Phone Feature - but especially for a woman alone in a car, you shoul d not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e., put on your hazard lights) or call "#77" like Lauren did. Too bad the cell phone companies don't give you this little bit of wonderful information.

thats cool, never new nothing bout that. i can imagine it would come in handy, but in a emergency i wouldnt even bother. one time my brother cracked his skull open on a block, dad ran him to the e.r. with a copper chasin him for speeding, it was kinda comical.
I have heard of that, never knew if it were true. also I've heard that if you flash your headlights and honk your horn in case of an emergency like driving someone to the hospital. it is legal to speed and run redlights. is that true?
I know here in canada, in my province anyways, you can get away with running a red light, but it had better be a damn good reason, ala, someones dieng, etc. cause if it isnt a good reason, they will gladly hand out a bunch of tickets!

In MO it is illegal for emergency wehicles to speed and run red lights with lights and siren. The law reads something like: the warn equipment is just to let people know that you are asking premission to have the rightway. Emergency vehicles are to obay all traffic laws. I know that if you have a accident in a emergency vehicle while responding with lights and siren you will get ticketed as well as the other person if you run a light and hit someone or they hit you. Emergency vehicle ticket for running the light other person ticket for fail to yelled right of way.
We had a few of those phony cop deals happen in my neck of the woods a few months ago. Two different guys, two different cars. They didn't catch either of them.
here in NJ, I believe that the police, fire and ambulances are permitted to go through the red lights with lights and sirens going, after a brief pause to allow everyone to know that they're there. My brother is a volunteer FF, and on the way to a fire, with his blue light, he must obey all traffic laws, but may pass on double yellow lines as long as the person in front of him yields him the right of way. Stinks too, he has a 400 HP pickup and can't open it up.
(star)*77 is to report aggressive drivers here in NJ. I got an answering machine once when I was watching a drunk driver.
as per New Jersey title 39 codes (motor vehicle codes) lights and siren REQUEST the rite of way, they DO NOT demand it. an emergency vehicle approching a red traffic signal or stop light must stop, and then can proceed when it is safe to do so. if you are involved in an accident do to running a red light or stop sign, or failing to give the rite of way, you WILL be found at fault.
MD also has #77, and it's posted all along the highways.
In Maryland, #77 connects to the nearest MSP (Maryland State Police) barrack.
Don't forget, 911 gets the nearest Emergency Dispatcher. Period.
(I MUST add, in Washington, DC. . . that doesn't mean ANYTHNG!!!)
DC also has 311 for a NON-emergency phone number.
To add to the first listing on the thread, several years ago, here in So. Maryland (Waldorf, to be exact) a MSP Trooper pulled over a young lady (for speeding), then raped her (was later convicted) while ON DUTY. As he was doing this dastardly deed, he placed his service weapon next to her head to remind her that HE was in control.
You should have heard the 'look-out' for this EX Trooper. After he committed this act, he left his assigned patrol area, then headed home to relax.
