I am not sure of the "proper" way, but what I would do, is take the steering wheel off, and put a screw in the ignition, then puch out the pin that holds the ignition in place, and pull it out.
Or the way my dad would do it when he did auto repos, you leave the steering column and wheel the way they are, and put a screw deep into the ingnition cylinder, and put a slide hammer on it and rip it out. You will break the pin in the cylinder, and then just slide the new one in and start it up.

that worked I used my dent puller and yanked the old one out. I had to get the last bit with some needle nose but in all about a 3 min. job. Thanks again

My dad would use that method when he was a repo man. He would have a spare ignition, pull the old one out in just a few minutes, slide the new one in, and the truck would start with not problems. Sometimes he would not even need the spare ignition, a small screwdriver would do the job, but I think that that is only in Chevy I am not sure.
